7 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Empowering Rural Women Through Sustainable Shea Butter & Agroecology in Ghana

Kusanaba Women’s Group Ltd. Co., formerly known as Titiaka Boressa Ltd., is a social enterprise founded in 2018 with a mission to empower rural poor widows in the Upper East Region of Ghana through the production of organic shea butter.

We provide capacity-building training and sensitization on good agronomical practices to decrease shea tree mortality and encourage tree regeneration: establish small-scale economic activities for women groups through the VSLA table banking saving and self-financing program: advocate indigenous seed cultivation by intercropping shea trees with maize, soybeans, and groundnuts to supplement productivity: organize local food fairs that showcase the various dishes cooked using shea butter. Shea butter is associated with low blood pressure in the Ghanaian population. We also promote the adoption of Agroecological farming practices and food processing by encouraging farmers to intercrop the shea trees with annual crops such as maize, millet, cowpea, soybeans, groundnuts, and sweet potatoes. This supplements income during off-peak seasons of shea kernels.
